I just came across again (and saved a copy of) the "Zero Mile List" for 240s; that is, all of the parts that should be replaced when buying a used 240 or at least one that has an unknown recent service history.
I was looking through the list and wondering about the cost--certainly, it's pretty reasonable to spend money to do things since getting and keeping everything in working order will prolong the life of these cars immensely, but the list looks at face value to be a decent sum of money.
How much would it run you (would you estimate) to do everything on the list? Using suitable Volvo-replacement sources--ipd, FCPGroton, VLVWorld, or any others that are "trustworthy"--is acceptable.
Here's the list, in case you want to deconstruct it on an item-by-item basis:

Oil and oil filter
Air and fuel filters
Airbox 'thermostat'
Battery cables
Clean throttle body
Vacuum hoses
Spark plugs
Spark plug wires
Distributor cap and rotor
Replace 'o-rings' in the distributor
Timing belt and tensioner
Adjust valves and replace valve cover gasket
Crank seals
Drive belts
Flame trap
Coolant hoses and thermostat
Waterpump
Flush coolant
Flush brake fluid
Check front and rear brake pads; replace if necessary (fronts wear first)
Check condition of all suspension bushings; replace if necessary
Flush trans. fluid
Replace differential fluid
Resolder fuel pump and overdrive relays
