Headgasket Question 200 1989

I did a headgasket replacement on my 2 year old 1989 245 DL. On this B230F non-turbo, I noticed that part of the cylinder head had corrosion and pitting in two places behind #4 cylinder and on the right front #1 cylinder. It appears that there are water jackets for the cylinder block that end at the head gasket. Is this correct? Is that why I've seen other postings where leaking coolant is reported near #1 cylinder (not from the water pump)?

Thanks in advance.
