trunk release 780 700 1990

The cable trunk release located in the drivers door jam is not working anymore. The cable has broke and I was wondering if anyone has tried to do a self correct.If so,was the cable readily available and how much trouble was the install. I know,the glove box still works but I would also like the cable as a back up....................Thanks, James
