Oil filters 120-130

I'm sure this has been done to death before but I can't find anything definitive in a search.

What sort of Oil filter should I use. I have read that the genuine Volvo oil filter has a pressure relief valve in it that does something useful. Others have described it as a bypass valve.

My local parts store looked up their book and sold me a filter that was listed as suitable for my 63 221. What can go wrong using that?

Anyone know for sure?
