I got in a bind with a popping sound in the top of the strut tower on the 93 940 and tore the thing down to replace the strut bearing. Well, I found a plastic housed thrust bearing under the upper mount and went to Volvo of Charlotte for a replacement. They not only don't list the bearing separately, but couldn't identify it. I tried every parts store on my side of Charlotte with no luck. When I got home, I carefully pried apart the same bearing from one of the 88's that I scrapped and found a standard steel axial load thrust bearing in the housing. After a good soaking and cleanup to remove the grit and old grease, I repacked it with a good grade of wheel bearing grease and snapped the plastic cover back on. The unit was reinstalled and the strut bearing is smooth as silk. The other side got the same treatment and the 940 is ready for a trip to Kentucky next weekend.
I'm certain that this is old news to most who work on their own Volvos but thought to post it just in case.
Regards,
