I was straightening out the back of my garage and I came upon a old, but high quality, dwell meter that I used to use (back in the 1960's) to adjust points on distributors (ever hear of that, youngsters?). I tossed it back there when our cars no longer had points -- didn't want to part with it, but couldn't think of any other use for it.
But over the past years on this list, I've read comments about using a dwell meter to make adjustments, such as (as I recall) balancing the oscillations of the oxygen sensor.
So let me ask you folks:
(1) how do I hook up my dwell meter to the oxygen sensor, or to another fitting, to properly read and make the adjustments. And what would be the optimal reading on the dwell meter?
(2) and just as important, my dwell meter has a selector switch for number of cylinders (4, 6 and 8) -- recalling that it was designed for the points of a distributor rather than setting a oxygen sensor. So what no. of cylinders should I select to get the right reading?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, all.
