While driving home last night, a horrible scraping/screeching/grinding noise commenced. It was not speed- or RPM-dependent as I pulled over to have a look. Way too loud to isolate, but the car was running fine. Shutting it down was the only way to stop it; I re-started, noise did the same.

I decided to try easing it home, as it was running perfectly. About a minute later, the noise just stopped. All the warning lights flashed on, but only for a split second. We made it home with no problems.

But this morning, there is only silence when the key is turned to Start. I've tried in Park, Reverse and Neutral; nothing. Bulb check is normal; all lights are at normal brightness. Nothing appears damaged, disconnected or missing under the hood.

I'm completely mystified! Anyone been here before?
