transmission problem 200 1986

My 86 240 station wagon has developed an intermitent automatic transmission problem. It will fail to upshift to the high gear. It will rev way beyond when it should shift. It eventually goes away. I'm nervious about a big bill heading my way. I checked the fluid level and it's ok. All idea appreciated. Thanks
