Hi, everyone. I've just completed the removal of my original main engine wiring harness. Its condition is appalling, and quite frightening really.
From the gray firewall connector into the sheath, I'd lost maybe one eighth of an inch of insulation. But inside the sheath, there was NO insulation remaining on any of those four wires. The Blue-Yellow to the starter is bare, except for about four inches!
And at the alternator? Someone had already done a very good repair near the end of the run. But further on back, both the oil sender and the alternator initial energizer wires were totally bare... for a good six inches or so. Insulation is also missing right where the bulk of the harness passes through the intake manifold. What's left just crumbles away... as a fine, rubbery powder.
If you've been putting off this repair, as I was, please please do it. I waited too long-- and ended up cooking my starter motor. The wires inside the sheathing were far worse than the visible ones. And the car was running perfectly!
My used upgraded harness from Dave Barton (bartonharness.com) is about to be gratefully installed. I cannot recommend this idea highly enough; his product, directions and service are nothing short of excellent.
