Got a 89 Volvo 244 DL ( Engine problems...I got questions ) 200

I got a 89 volvo 244 DL for $50.00. I have a long story!
The second owner said that the car smokes when you try
to eccelerate quickly and that it failed smog. She took it
to a mechanic and had a full engine diagnostic done.
The paperwork said that the engine compression was all over 150+.
But the car was buring oil bad & that the valve seals and rings need
to be replaced. The plugs have about 1000 miles on them as the owner
said. I pulled each one and they were not gapped correcltly and they
were a little black but not soaked with oil. The oil smells like fuel.
My mechanic buddy told me that the flame trap might be clogged. Smiles!
I went back and took the flame trap off and shook the tube and copper
colored dust came out of the tube...like alot of dust. Oh and three out
of four of the spark plugs matched and the number one cyl plug didnt match
as it said on the paperwork to replace the spark plug wire etc.
The car has a new Amm installed, Oh I took the plastic tube that connects
to the intake and it was full of oil gunk bad. Would the Egr valve
toss oil into the intake tube? Forgive my as im new to this.

(In the long run if I dont fix this engine) I got a 89 740 engine.
Would this engine drop in even if the cap and rotor is in the rear?
