I have a '94 965 and I think the steering rack may be going bad.
The car makes a sort of clunking to grinding sound on the driver's side going over larger bumps at slow speed.
The control arm strut bushings have been replaced with poly bushings a couple of years back.
I checked for steering play at the wheel with the car on the ground, and I can induce a sort of clunk on the driver's side front wheel by torquing by hand about the strut axis. The clunk seems like it is on the steering rack end of the rod going to the tie rod.
What are the usual failure modes of the steering rack? I know that finding the source of clunks in steering can sometimes be problematic. The car has ~150K miles on it. I'm thinking that if I replace this steering rack, I will get new tie rod ends with it and do it all together.
My car has the CAM type rack.
