First, let me say how much I enjoy reading this forum. Although silent until now, I have solved some problems due to the content of this forum. Now, I find I want some input into a decision I am about to make.
I am the original owner of my 1991 240. It is in fantastic shape and has never spent the night outdoors. It has finally stopped blowing cold air. The compressor cycles off and on and this tells me the freon is all but gone.
I have also noticed what appears to be some oil at the front of the compressor. I have a new (remanufactured) compressor that I picked up last summer at a great price.
My question is this. Should I convert the old gal over to 134 or bite the bullet and pay the high price for R12 and keep the system intact. Either way, I will have the new compressor installed. The cost for the conversion kit is a shade over two hundred and about the same money to install it. It would be less labor to just have the compressor installed and put R12 back in, but might run as high as 100 to 150 just for the R12.
I have heard that converted systems do not do as good a job as the original R12 systems. Any thoughts on this? Anyone gone either route and kind enough to share your experience?
