Cracked Bilstein HDs 200

While searching for a clunk, I noticed that the threaded portion of the strut shaft (where it pokes through the strut mount) has developed a lengthwise crack. Suprisingly, it does not line up with one of the Allen "points" in the socket head. The struts are 1 year old Bilstein HDs.

Has anyone else seen something like this? Is it an indicator that the shaft is split in the body of the strut (mat'l seam)?
