Turn Signal 'Clicker' 200 1989

What is it that makes the clicking sound when you have the turn signal on? On my 260 diesel the sound was very pronounced (read: loud) but I can rarely hear it on my '89 240, and it's usually louder when turning left (turn signal arm in the downward position) than when turning right (turn signam arm in the upward position).

Thanks.
