Alarm Problems 200 1990

Havin some problems with my car and figured perhaps one of you guys could help me out. The story is not a short one so thanks in advance for any postings:
I bought my 90 DL (auto) about a year ago and for the first 8 months the only problem was that occasionally if the car was low on gas it would have an erratic idle and die but never after the car was out of first gear. This happened maybe once every week, usually right before or after I filled up, but it never died on the freeway or at high speeds. About a month ago, the car was parked on a hill and refused to turn over. I was going to have the thing towed but the tow driver showed up and suggested that I roll the car down the hill and try getting it to start down there. It didn't work but we managed to get the thing running by holding down the gas and turning the ignition until it started. The car wouldn't idle but I managed to get the car to a mechanic who performed these services:
Changed cam plug, changed torque rod bushings, changed fuel pressure regulator, the distributor cap, the ignition rotor, new spark plugs, cleaned out the flame trap and carb, and changed the throttle body cable.
Car worked ok for about a month and then it started to idle really erratically. Now it didn't matter if the gas was full, the car would start, rev a bit and then stall or it would get moving and then die in motion. My check engine light was going on and going out or just staying on. After the car warmed up a bit the symptoms would lessen but never totally go away. I took it to an independent Volvo mechanic who told me he took off the kick panel and was amazed to see a spider-web of wires that in all his years of working on 240's he had never seen before. From what I understood, Someone had installed an alarm at some point and had linked it to the computer, also hiding the wire needed to diagnose the problems stored in the computer. The mechanic said that he could remove the dash and hunt around for the wire but that would be costly and may not bear fruit. Because he could not find the wire to plug into the diagnostic equipment, anything the computer had recorded was not readable.

My question is has anyone had this occur where an alarm has changed things around and if so, is there any idea where this wire may have been placed. If that isnt possible, what may be some of the causes of the rocky idle when cold? The car also is idling high and then low at stoplights and sometimes completely dies right after the high idle.

Thanks again
Jon
