Starting problem 200 1979

Just bought my 8th 240 - a 1979 242 with a manual transmission, sunroof, and no rust! My mechanic friend pretty much mastered the B230F/ L-Jet set-up working on my other 240's thru the years, but he's having a problem with this one not wanting to start, maybe for a couple of reasons. Forgive my ignorance on this -he's too stubborn to admit we need help so I'm posting alone:

A few times when we were trying to start it he had to play with wiring & relays because the fuel pump (or relay?) wasn't buzzing like it should (sorry I'm not more technical). Sometimes after getting the buzz it would start, sometimes not.

The previous owner replaced the coil with a weird looking yellow one, and I think that it's even been relocated, but I'm not sure. (It's up by the firewall on the passenger side.) Sometimes after playing with that it would start, sometimes not.

There was a broken timing belt in the trunk, so obviously it was changed. Could a timing issue cause no-start problems? The engine does crank - just won't start.

I got the Hayne's out & read the troubleshooting section -asked him if he'd checked to see if the spark plugs were incorrectly gapped, and got the feeling he wasn't appreciating my attempt to help. Also, you have to jiggle the key just to get it in the ignition, sometimes jiggle it more to turn it. Probably no relation to the ignition system that the book says to check, but thought I'd mention it.

Someday I'm going to learn how to do all this myself - and he'll have to find someone else's car to work on for free!
