So today I go out for a drive and my cel comes on. When I read the code it is the P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Preformance Problem. I monitored the temperature with my computer and watched as the temperature stayed around 50 deg. f. then about 15 minutes later JUMPED to around 190 deg. f. Only to drop back to around 48 deg. f. after I had restarted the car and was driving down the road.
I have a spare thermostat which I bought last year when this error appeared but went away not to return until now. However I believe my problem is not the thermostat as I was thinking and is instead the coolant temperature sensor.
From reading it looks to be at the thermostat housing and is either going or shorting out. My questions are:
1. Has anyone else seen this problem and if so what caused it?
2. What's involved in replacing it and how much antifreeze if any?
3. Also where is a good place to get one?
4. Has anyone used Propylene glycol rather than Ethylene Glycol. Or can you even mix them? From what I have read there is no preformance difference between the two only Propylene is less toxic.
Thanks,
William
