LH Underhood Main Fuse replacement - alternative CHEAP source found... 200

After pulling some 760 door parts to convert the 940 to remote/keyless entry, I cruised through the GM section of the PnP, looking under hoods for a decent appearing Delco alternator for my MG. I discovered a couple of interesting things:

First there were dozens upon dozens of late 80's early 90's mid-sized GM FWD cars (Chev Lumina/Corsica, Pontiac Grand Am, Cutlass Ciera, etc) with one, two and sometimes three, of those neat Weatherpak fuse holders that IPD sell for $15 as the cure for the corroded 240 LH factory fuse setup. I snagged a few of the ones with thicker wiring - these had 20A fuses inside.

The other discovery was that these same cars have a bunch of relays under the hood which also use the Weatherpak moisture-proof system on their sockets. The relays are often Bosch or Hella - a little bigger on the exterior than the aftermarket ones you see, but with sealed sockets and thick wires. Ideal for powerful headlights or foglights, driving lights, etc.

I threw a few in the toolbox along with the fuseholders, and when the clerk compared them to the other stuff I was paying for, she said she wouldn't charge for them - "it's just little stuff".

...something to keep in mind when you're down at the yard, and you still have the original LH fuse setup in your car.

Oh yeah - the alternator: same exact experience as the last junker I pulled (nice, freshly reman. Bosch). The first parts store had young staff guys watching the hockey playoffs, who read their guidebook and hooked it up to their machine and pronounced it DOA.

Down the road the parts guy was older and more experieced. He tested it - said it was good as gold, mucho amps and 14 Volts.

Moral? get a second opinion on "dead" parts.
