blower fan motor on way out? 200

did a search for my symptoms but no luck, so here's my problem. car is a '91 245 auto w/285k now on clock. last week the blower motor fan worked randomly. when it did work, it was prone to 'surge' and then back off almost to a stop (as if i was manually turning the position from 1 to 4 and back again). checked the fuse (25 amp blue) and twirled it a few times (had fan switch turned on while twirling but this didnt energize the fan. finally replaced the fuse but this had no effect (guess the original fuse was ok). question is, what's wrong? logically, since the motor does work at times (without any screeching or other abnormal noise) i'm assuming i wont have to do the dreaded blower motor job (or am i just deluding myself?). bad switch? bad gound? the 'surging' thing really has me baffled...any thoughts? bear in mind i'm no electric whiz but i can follow directions (unlike my kids!). thanks guys. brgds
