240 Sedan - Steering Rack Issues 200 1991

Hello,

My 91 240 sedan has been acting up lately. A week ago I put new tires on and was told my driver's side balljoint was going bad. Driving it home from the garage it was very stiff and felt as if there was no power steering. The car had been fine that morning before the tires were installed. Just seems a bit odd that it would happen right after the tires were installed.

I took the car to a garage near where I work & they told me my P/S pump was bad. My dad & I replaced the pump w/one we had from a previous 240. No change. P/S fluid isn't leaking, the belts are good, etc. I continued to drive the car for the next two days and the steering got progressively worse and the wheel started squeaking and grunting when making sharp turns or going in/out of parking spaces. I had to brace my arms against the wheel to keep the car on the road. I took it to another garage and they told me the steering rack was going bad.

That night we determined that I had a CAM rack and I was going to buy a reconditioned one w/a lifetime warranty from a local parts dealer for $150. Not a bad price! Yesterday the car's steering was almost normal...??? When I back out of my driveway to the left or make a left-hand turn it is a little stiff, but nowhere near what it had been the past few days. I'm attributing that to the balljoint which needs replaced.

Any thoughts on what might be going on w/my car's steering?

-Susie
