Newer AW-71s in older cars 200

Good afternoon,

Can those of us with mechanical speedometers and questionable transmissions use AW-71s out of newer cars? For example, can a mechanical speedo pickup be installed in a transmission pulled out of a 90's 740 for my '85 245T? Or is this a fool's errand?
