cooling fan 960 900

Yesterday in traffic jam on highway the temp gauge almost reached red until i noticed it. I stopped the car and checked the cooling fan was not running. So I turned the heater fan on full speed and was able to control the temp. I did the dianostic test 3 by inserting pin in socket no. 2. the relay clicks but no fan turning. i took out the connecter fron relay and there are 3 wires. black is already ground and there is red and green. Can i try to connect red or green wire directly to +ve terminal of battery to see if fan is ok.
