89 240,ignition switch will not budge,how is it removed? 200

the key will not turn in the switch ,i removed the back on the switch and was able to drive the car home by sticking a screwdriver in the wiring harness to turn it,but one question is why did the steering wheel turn?why didn't it stay locked? .....so anyhow how do i get the switch out?...Kris
