Engine noises ( 240DL B230 F engine) 200 1989

My car seems to idel very low there is no rpm gauge so I can tell you what exact RPM it is but it sounds like 650-700 rpm and the valves rattel to the point that it almost sounds like a desiel engine. There is no check engine light or any warning light comming on on the vehicel when it does this. I tried putting some premium (93 octaine) gass in it and it queted the engine a little but it still souds like a desiel engine. My grand parents have a 1994 940 wagon and it makes the same noies. Do all Volvos make this noies or is there something wrong with the car? ( this is my first Volvo so I am not extreamly fimilure with them)But so far it has been the best car i have ever owened.
