Oil pressure gauge problem 200

The needle on the oil pressure gauge of my 1983 242 immmediately snaps to the highest reading (bar 3) when I start the engine.It
remains at 3 until I shut the engine off even when idling etc. When I disconnect the wire at the sensor there is no difference. Any ideas of what could be the problem would be appreciated.
