Hello, I have a 1987 240 DL with 5sp. transmission. I found it the other day with a dead battery, bump started it, and drove for about 15 minutes before it quit. When it quit the guages went crazy, the fuel guage dropped slowly, and it seemed like I ran out of gas although I had just filled it up the day before. I got towed home and started looking around here. I've taken off the alt. and had it tested - it's okay. I also cleaned up the voltage reg and brushes which also look fine. I've cleaned all ground wires I can find on manifold and all the wires in the starter, alt, coil, battery loop. I replaced the 25 amp fuse.

I can jump start the car and keep it running for about 2 to 5 minutes at idle. If I continuously rev the engine it dies more quickly, maybe in about a minute. I checked the fuel pump relay (white) and it's dated june of 2005, which is just before the time I bought this car. I've noticed when I turn on the key the speedo jumps up and down which I don't remember before. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you - scott.
