Hello all.
I thought I'd run this one past you guy's.....and er gal's.
My '85 wagon (230,000 miles) has a bad emission smell.
I keep it tuned up and its running great. My MPG has always remained steady in the six years (120,000 mi.) that I've owned it. (22-23 in the city) It even seems that the MPG has gotten better in the recent past.
It passed the emissions testing done here in Houston TX but the last two years it barey passed the NOX limits.
I replaced the cat. converter a couple of years ago but I have never replaced the O2 sensor. I know volvo used to say that the O2 should be replaced every 60,000 miles.
The smell seems worse when at higher speeds. I can smell it with the drivers window down. One time I floored it at highway speeds to get a Ford Ranger off my bumper and I saw the driver give me the "hand fanning the nose" gesture.
Also, my taipipe that I replaced last Nov. is very black with soot. The tip of the tailpipe seems to be eroding away.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
