5 minutes from the junkyard 700

1990 740T

I'm debating junking this for another car; possibly volvo, possibly not.

ok, so my headliner is falling down and I think I can fix that. I know my center driveline bearing is junk, I'm going to have it fixed for like 100-150$ (not sure exactly) no big problem.
The thing was put together by a used volvo and other euro car retailer and purchased by my parents in 99 I think (I was 12). Now I'm in college and not able to buy repairs. This car was in a minor accident (the trunk still leaks, thanks MAACO) in 01. rear bumper replaced, the taillights replaced, crappy paintjob resulted. The hood is dented, needs to be replaced, can't repair. The passenger rear door is a mismatched color with some slight rust on it. Don't let your brother learn to drive too close to your volvo, folks.

Big problem #1:
Tail-lights. This is driving me up a tree. I'm blowing through fuses as fast as I can put them in and I can't locate the short. It's not consistent and I have checked the wiring from the trunk through the entire door channel and up to the wiring harness junction box. No loose or bare wires. There is no plastic cover on the rear firewall passthrough, but moving (1-2 inches, not just a bit) the harness at that point had no effect. I removed my bulb out indicator, checked under the fuse connection, again no visible faults. The bulb out indicator looks like it's in very good shape. All the solder seems fine, but is some yellowing normal? I'd given up, but I think now maybe I will buy another 9$ box of 25 fuses and yank both connections from the harness linkage (between the taillight harness and the lighting relay). Then I'll reconnect one or the other and whichever one blows fuses will be disconnected. Then I'll use a paperclip or something to jump the juice from one to the next individual wire and blow a fuse on one and simply clip that wire. I could live without some interior light, but taillights, I need.

Big problem #2:
My car is a frankensteined beaner style construction. (Beaner is a reference to attitude and behaviour, not a whole race, just like white trash or cracker.)The ignition computer is from pre 88, the main computer is from 91, the EGR system (california only) is from 1992. I have to go to the dealership and ask them what their deal was when they put this together. The car seems to be a hodgepodge or parts. The fuel pump is also failing and is on all the time (engine off, KP2), and some odd wiring was done with the fuel pumps. It appears the fuses have been bypassed, as the fuel pump persists when fuse 1 and 11 (in tank and main) have both been pulled. The wiring to the bulb holders has been monkeyf_____, and the bulb holders were replaced with new but one of them has started falling apart.

Does anyone have a good suggestion on what to do? I'm about at my wit's end.

-Will
