Ambient temp gauge wiring 200

I just bought an ambient temperature gauge for next to nothing on ebay, it was just too rare a deal to not jump on. It will probably just sit on my desk for ages till I get around to doing something with it, since it's just the gauge, the sender and wiring aren't included.

Do I have to locate the proper temp sensor from a Volvo dealer, and if so is the sender specific to 240s, or do later models use the same unit (makes it easier to locate if it's a replacement part for a 940 for example)

Would it be reasonable easy to get a generic 12V temp sensor and just figure out the correct resistances to calibrate it?

As I said it will probably just sit on my desk for a while (it is a cool looking paperweight) I might even put it in unwired, I just like the look of the thing.

Also, what's the best spot to mount the sender for an accurate reading?

Thanks again oh wise ones.
