90 240 wagon overheating weirdness 200 1990

Hi all,
Been using the 90 240 wagon to commute to work, around 20 miles each way.
On cooler mornings the car seems to run hotter than on warmer days. The gauge will creep up to the orange danger area quite quickly. It doesn't matter if I'm sitting still or running full boar on the highway. Blasting the heat will usually bring it back down, but yesterday I had to pull off the highway and let it idle in neutral until it came down to a normal level. I have changed the thermostat, the water pump recently and also used a chemical flush product to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? When it doesn't overheat you would never know there was a problem, doesn't even reach half. Problem is really intermittant.
Thanks...
Chuck Jaxel
