'90 240 delayed shift out of first 200

4 days ago my 240 DL wagon (aka love of my life) began to have trouble shifting out of first. The problem doesn't seem to occur when the transmission goes to 3rd or 4th but did do it once when shifting to reverse this monring. It can generally be described like something is not catching and then there is a clunk and it lurchs as the gears seem to catch. It also seem to be missing power at lower speeds/lower gears. It is getting far worse by the day. Is this my transmission failing or something simplier (please please please). A friend suggested I start by changing the transmission fluid and filter which hasn't been done for at least 18 months. I can't get it in to see the regular mechnic until the weekend.

Any suggestions or thoughts on what this could be?
