Replace Voltage Stabilizer With Generic Electrical Device?

I was shocked to find that the asking price for the three terminal voltage
stabilizer on the back of the instrument panel for my '93 240 is priced
at over $20. As far as I can tell, this is simply a fixed 10 volt voltage
regulator.

A part which seems to meet those specifications is the National
Semiconductor LM2937ET-10. A data sheet is here: http://www.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce/newark/en_US/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp;jsessionid=4PQRP3DHRJ12ACXDUY0CFFYK2OTCIIV1?SKU=07B6331&N=0

Newark Electronics single piece price is under $3.00, which seems reasonable
for such a standard part.

Has anyone already gone down this path before?

John
