My wife, bless her soul, gave away her second car to someone less fortunate. An 89 Buick LeSabre with 130k in reasonably good shape - our winter beater and boat hauler. Now that we are sans trailer hitch, I'm looking for options for my 87 244 or 89 245. In chronological order, here is what I found:
1. Advance Auto parts wants about $239 + tax for a nice shiny new one.
2. A local welder can make one that would probably pull a locomotive for $300.
3. I went to Vermont's 2 largest Volvo boneyards and found nothing.
But then, as I was headed home from a day of searching and in a distant town, passed an 89 245 in someone's driveway that had a hitch. At first I thought "lucky guy". Then I thought about asking where he got it and for how much. Then I thought maybe he'd sell it. So I turned around and went to the house. The owner happened to be home and explained that he had no use for the hitch. Plus he was unloading the car next month. If I could get the hitch off, I could have it for free. Wow!
But as luck would have it, his wife was running late and needed the car immediately. So we talked a little and he told me the blower moter was shot, there was a short in one of the tail lights and it leaked a little oil, but I could buy the whole car for 300 bucks. (218k, dented passenger door, driver seat right shoulder sag, rusted tailgate, reasonably good leather interior, very good rubber)
I want to go back for the hitch, maybe buy the car, but - What do I need to remove the hitch? Looked like 4 bolts, and how do I install it, prefereably on my "younger" 244, or my 245? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. / Jim
