Glove box lock 700 1991

Am I missing something? I've shredded my fingers and thumb trying to twist the spring lock retainer onto the back of the lock body to no avail. It just keeps poping out. Anybody else replace the lock? How did you refit the spring retainer?

Also switched over to Mobil1 and the rear seal not unexpectedly began to leak. Does this ever clear up by itself or am I in for a not-so-fun weekend?
