Need help making an A/C condenser purchase decision (93, 944) 900

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to hear from someone with experience before I make a mistake.

Last summer I bought the Cachan manufactured condenser (~$200) and had it installed. If I had to guess I'd say their quality is fair. Even new it looked kinda ratty. I ordered AP but they shipped Cachan. I don't do my own A/C. It worked fine from June to September (the season here in Michigan). This May A/C is kaput and the condenser is the culprit.

My trusted part supplier offered to replace it under warranty. Without giving names let's just say they go by their initials.....

I also contacted an outstate dealer and I'm waiting on a price for OEM. My local dealer is Michigan doesn't play ball beyond 10%. I can't blame him because he has a captive market. List is $450.

A great salvage guy, from my own personal experience, has a used one for $75. He has he only sells them from systems he has disassembled that maintained pressure, so he knows they are good.

The car has over 300k miles and I'm turning it over to the new driver in the family next year.

Air Products, from what I was told, no longer makes their replacement for the 940.

My vin number is over 130000....there were many changes in the 940 A/C system.

What do I do? Keep in mind that I will probably spend $250 to change it out and charge the system.

Thanks in advance for your reply,

Mark
