Kickdown cable catastrophe or coincidence 200

my 90 240 sedan if that matters would not shift up properly on Friday. What I found was that the kickdown cable was comprimised at the adjustment linkage just prior to the throttle assembly. The cable itself was intact but the metal strands were broken. I did what I thought was a quick fix and had no problems till yesterday. Now it seems like the whole car is about to disintegrate. No power, constantly shifting into overdrive, using way to much gas, and probably totally unrelated, the front end is shaking at 50, tire pressure is good.
I'm thinking i compounded things by letting the tank get low between paychecks.
I'm think fuel filter, any suggestions?(besides getting another job)
