960 Center Vents Warm / Side Vents Cool with A/C On (long) 900 1992

1992 965 with 210K miles. For some odd reason, with the A/C on and ambient temp in the 80s-90s, the center dash vents will blow warm air while the side dash vents blow cool air. The cool air is not as cool as it probably should be, but noticeably cooler than the center vents. Pressing the recirc. button will cool down the center vents a little, but still not nearly as cool as the side vents. Driving at night when the ambient temp. dropped back into the 70s the A/C acted relatively normal, although the center vents were still probably not as cool as the side vents.

The compressor cycles on and off normally and the temp. sensors (at least the interior sensor) seem to be functioning correctly as in full "auto" mode the ECC kept the fan at high and would automatically turn on the recirc. occasionally to try to cool the interior (problem was it couldn't cool it down because only the side vents were blowing cool air while the center vents were heating the cabin back up). The problem is not speed or load dependant (already tackled the "air to floor on acceleration" diaphram problem a while back). I tried to study the ECC schematic in my Chilton manual (wish Bentley had a 960 manual) but I can't figure out how the temp can differ among the dash vents. The system was converted (by me) to R134a in 1999 or 2000, which was the last time it was charged.

TIA,
Lance
