Hello Folks,

I'm new to the brickboard and come with a request for ideas. I have a 1988 760 Turbo that has served me very well. Driving down the road a few days ago, I smelled burning plastic and saw smoke coming out from under the hood. I pulled over, popped the hood and found that the smoke was coming from my electric pusher fan which runs when I am using the A/C as I was that day. The fan motor had apparently seized up, and had gotten so hot that fan blade assembly (which is plastic) had actually melted and fallen off of the shaft. I disconnected the fan from the wiring harness (connection is right next to the fan)and drove home, removed the dead fan assembly from the car, and ordered another one.

The next morning, I went to start the car, and the (4 month old) battery was dead. Assuming it had something to do with the fan fiasco the day before, I took a closer look, and when I cut back the black wiring sleeve that protects the fan wires, I found that the two wires (red/gray and black)had actually melted off thier insultation and fused together. I found these wires melted and fused all the way back to just in front of left strut tower. I cut the bad part out to where I found the wires undamaged, and capped them off with the thought of replacing the removed, damaged wiring when my new fan arrived. I charged the battery, drove around a bit, and assumed that I had fixed the immediate problem. Sure enough, this morning, I found a dead battery again.

My Haynes manual, owner's manual, and fuse box label don't show any fuse for this fan circut which I suppose would explain how power was able to continue to the wiring despite the shorting the melted wiring caused. In my internet search for info, I have seen non-specific information regarding a fan relay. Should I be looking for a relay that was likely damanged in the incident? Is it likely that damage to the relay is responsible for my overnight battery discharge?
