900 glove compartment lock broke 900 1993

The lock on my 1993 940T glove compartment broke. The knob turns and stops but there is very little friction/resistance. In particular, no spring force is felt when turning the knob. The (master) key would not help either.

Is there a way to remove the glove compartment cover without breaking things? How do I otherwise open the glove compartment?
