'93 245 pinging 200 1993

I have 2 '93 wagons. One pings, one doesn't. Mechanic has checked everything and replaced knock sensor. Says timing advances as it should but the pinging often lasts more than a couple seconds under load. Any suggestions? And why can't the late models run as well as my '86?
