1987 740T Fuel?? 700 1987

I have a 87 740T. It runs fine but runs a bit rich 18 mpg and some times idles hi. It it is at 900 rpm in park when Shut off it will start just fine. Most of the time it will be at 1200rpm and some times as high as 2200.If this is the case it floods and is very dificult to restart, pedal position does not seem to have any effect, then lots of black smoke till it is running smooth. Worse if hot. 214,xxx miles. Any ideas ? I am a fair mechanic on domestic cars, not so fair on computerized ones. Thank you
