noisy ac compressor that works? 700 1989

Has anyone had a noisy rebuilt compressor that works fine (noisy since installation about 20k miles ago)and have you found a way to quiet it? It's only noisy when it's engaged (like a metallic chattery grindy noise). Is it possible that the clutch plates would be rubbing the housing? Just looking for opinions before I start opening it up.
