Engine mounts replacement, am I doing anything wrong?

This past weekend, I failed for the third time to try to replace the engine mounts. I was able to loosen and remove all nuts. But I could not raise the engine enough to clear the top studs of the engine mounts. From the faq, it looks really simple, but not in my case. Is there any trick that I did not know?
