My son drives a 1983 240 GL. It still has the original equipment US air conditioner, although it hasn't worked for a couple of years, presumably because it is out of freon. As I recall, it will be several hundred dollars to fully convert from the old freon to the new with a new compressor, etc. However, his girl friend's father has a "kit" of some kind that supposedly sucks the old freon out, and charges with the new (is it R134?) freon. Can anyone offer insight as to whether this is harmful or not for the engine or compressor? Or whether it is otherwise advisable or not? Or whether it may be worth spending a few hundred dollars to do it with all new stuff? (The car is NOT collector quality, and has a lot of cosmetic issues, but it has under 150K miles on it).
Thanks.
Kurt
