Removing shift lever 120-130

My son & I are removing the engine and trans from his '67 122S. I'm reminded once again how easy these cars are to work on. Everything is going well - except we can't figure out how to remove the shift lever. The chromed piece that connects between the stubby rod at the top of the trans and the knob, turns as it it might be threaded. However no amount of turning causes it to unscrew. It's almost as though there's a circlip or the like holding the chrome section and the stubby rod together, but if there is, I reckon we'll need Houdini to remove it.
Alternatively there is a large nut that appears to hold the stubby shifter rod in place where it enters the trans. Does this nut have to be removed?
As you can see, we need help.
