I received a few replies to a previous post describing plastic bushings at the bottom of the shifter as part of the linkage to the transmission. The oringinal problem was an inability to engage 2nd, then 1st gear without pulling hard to the left on the shifter. It worsened quickly to the current state where they can't be engaged at all. I pulled up on the reverse collar and this made it worse, now reverse can't be found either, only gears 3 and 4.
After removing the center console, shifter boot and metal plate to expose the mechanism, I found no bushings or any other parts comprising a linkage, only a single rod attached to the ball at the bottom of the shifter level. The rod continues forward on top of the transmission beyond where it can be seen or felt.
Am I missing something or do I not have an M46 transmission that goes with this car. It's a 91 turbo wagon, 4sp + overdrive. Otherwise,I can't see anything to fix and don't fancy dropping the transmission to look around and explore it.
Ideas?
