Hello Brickboard,
I need some help figuring out the numbers onthe side of my transmission so I can identify it for repairs.I have a Volvo green manual printed in 1986, Section 4(43) BW55,AW55,AW70,AW71 Automatic Transmission 240,260 1975-, that i have been refering to. It has all of the parts for all 4 trans. listed including the old part numbers and the newer ones that superced them. It also gives a very detailed description of disassembly cleaning an reassembly of the valve body and the planetry gear sets and clutch and brake packs. It has a page in the front that tells how to identify a transmission, but I just cant deem to understand the code talk used in the description. I need help.
The small tag on the side is black and says 3-71 in the model box. Volvo green manual says that means its a aisin warner aw71. No Problem. Then there is a Volvo part number 1208-378. I tried to look these numbers in the Volvo green book and I couldnt find anything that corresponded to my part number, and found it near impossible to figure out if any of the numbers given in the book were even in the same range.
Then there are numbers that are stamped into the plate, but not painted like the previous numbers mentioned(sorry should have said they were painted).
These numbers were serial numbers I think and they are 83MF 86102.
From what I can tell from the green manual, 83 is year manufacture, M is month(Volvo didnt count the letter 'I', so M=december, 12th month) and F is the type(Aw 71). The next set 8=Volvo installed unit, 6102????.
The example in the manual is for the number 0012(instead of 6102) and it reads, "0012 = manufacturing number, start = 0001 each month"
Does this statement make sense to anyone?
Can someone please explain how to relate this statement to my numbers 6102?
The next sentence in the manual says, "From 1983 M/Y, only the Volvo part number is stamped on the transmission." I found this to be more confusing as I think mine is a 83 and I cant find any other numbers on the transmission casing except 8961 and I cant find any relevence for them either.
Could someone please help me understand this?
