'96 960 'skips' at 2800 RPM or 70mph 900 1996

I just replaced the throttle position switch in hopes that it would cure this problem.
Symptoms:
Extended (2 sec.) cranking time unless the gas pedal is depressed..
Revs up fine, will occasionally skip between 2500 and 3500 RPM
Same thin at highway 70-75 MPH speed, runs just fine then a single or several skips
OBD-II reader reports no codes but the check engine light comes on seconds after start-up, only goes out after reset.

While inspecting the engine with my hand on top of the head and revving the engine until it skips, I can feel that the skip varies cylnders and is not localized to one cylinder....

Help before I take it to CarMax....
