Power Steering Diagnosis 700 1989

I recently developed somewhat hard steering on my 740 sedan. The wheel is a little harder to turn (stiff). The feeling is consistent anywhere on the steering swing. The fluid level is OK; the belt is fine: and I believe that the vibration damper pully is OK (although it appears to be original).

Any suggestions on how I can diagnosis this problem? With 235k on the car I am reluctant to start swapping pumps, etc. without some sense of direction.

Just as a note all other front suspension and steering parts are OK.
