Over the last several weeks I have been attempting to replace the power steering rack on our 91 245SE. All of the useful tips for freeing the rack from the lower u-joint were to no avail, and finally what I did was extend the slit in the lower u-joint with a dremel, pry it open, and drift the u-joint off the steering shaft with a punch.
Problem is, now my steering shaft is futzed, and the new u-joint and rack combo will not slide on.
I have a steering shaft from our 81 245DL that is ready to go - structurally sound with good splines, etc. Is this a direct exchange, or should I hit the junkyard for one from a newer (airbag equipped) car?
TIA...
